China has been the world leader in the number of applications for patents for inventions filed by residents of the country for several years.
Per the Global Innovation Index in 2022, China was one of the most competitive in the world, ranking 11th in the world, 3rd in the Asia & Oceania region and 2nd for countries with a population of over 100 million. China is the only middle-income economy and the only newly industrialized economy in the top 30.
U.S. lawmakers passed the $280 billion CHIPS and Science Act out of a fear that China was about to overtake the U.S. in scientific and technological expertise. But a recently released study suggests that, by one measure, China already has.
In AI's cutting-edge field of deep learning, China has six times more patent publications than the US. Indeed China has already overtaken the United States to become the world's number one undisputed in many fields of artificial intelligence in speech technology.

From researching the most famous inventions of Japan and China, I've concluded that China does stand ahead of Japan in terms of creating new, useful technology. Although Japan has created many outstanding inventions, they don't stand on a large scale as China's does.
